DRY MOUTH

By | blog | No Comments

For most, dry mouth is not a common thing but as you grow older it does become a common problem. Most likely caused by dehydration, or by simply sleeping with an open mouth.

Unfortunately, for others, dry mouth is a chronic problem that can have a distressing impact on day-to-day life. In addition to the physical side effects, it can also leave people feeling far less confident in social situations, to the point where eating and speaking in public becomes upsetting.

Current research estimates that around one in four adults suffer from the condition and this number rises to 40% in the over-55s. This makes dry mouth one of the most common oral health problems.

To help you understand more about dry mouth, here are some facts about the condition and our best advice for managing it.

Top Eight facts about dry mouth:

1. Dry mouth or ‘xerostomia’ is a condition that affects the flow of saliva, causing your mouth to feel dry.

2. Your mouth needs saliva to be able to work properly. Saliva keeps your mouth moist, and it helps to break down your food and helps you to swallow. It also acts as a cleanser, neutralizing plaque acids. It is constantly washing around your mouth and teeth, fighting tooth decay and helping to keep your teeth clean.

3. Having less saliva can also affect the taste of food and makes it harder to eat drier foods. Sometimes it can affect your speech and it makes people more likely to have bad breath.

4. Dry mouth is usually worse at night when the mouth produces less saliva than in the daytime.

5. Dry mouth can cause the mouth to become sore and there is a higher risk of tooth decay and gum disease.

6. It can be caused as a result of old age, or, quite often it is a side effect of medication – especially heart, blood pressure, and depression tablets. Your doctor, pharmacist or dental team should be able to tell you whether your medication can cause problems.

7. Women are more likely to suffer from the chronic dry mouth than men (27 percent compared to 21 percent).

8. Studies have shown that those that suffer from the chronic dry mouth also have a higher risk of mental health illnesses and social anxiety.

Top Four tips:

1. Make sure you regularly visit your dentist – You have a higher risk of tooth decay and gum disease with dry mouth, and these can get worse quicker than usual. So it is important to visit your dental team regularly. They will tell you how often you should visit.

2. It is important to use a fluoride toothpaste containing at least 1350 to 1500ppm (parts per million) of fluoride. Be aware that some products contain Sodium Lauryl Sulphate (SLS), and some people with dry mouth find this can irritate the mouth and make the condition worse.

3. There are many products designed to help your mouth stay moist and comfortable. These are usually gels or sprays. Some have extra ingredients that may help prevent tooth and gum problems. There are also special products to help with your day-to-day oral hygiene (for example toothpaste and mouth rinses).

4. Chewing sugar-free gum can help ease dry mouth as it encourages your mouth to make saliva. Your dental team might recommend products such as rinses, gels, pastes, and lozenges which you can get from the pharmacist.

The Man With The Peaches & Cream Smile

By | Uncategorized | No Comments

A starched shirt, crisp and tailored, shaping your Monday-Thru-Friday body like a glove.  A close shave, a spritz of cologne, and a fresh cut.  You accessorize appropriately, pairing the perfect tie, socks and pocket square with your blazer.  You’re ready for the big event.

“Cheese!”  You smile, revealing peaches and cream corn rows of a regular brush, floss and semi-annual cleaning.  Could it be better?  Sure.  You grind your teeth at night, you brush on occasion, you floss with the regularity of Cleveland Browns playoff wins.

Coffee, tea, wine, blueberries, tobacco… there are many reasons why one would have stained teeth.  But the reasons to have white teeth are far more plentiful.

Are your teeth made of wood?

Your smile lights up a room.  It’s a chandelier, set to a moment.  Laugh, and it lights up a room.

Pearls that showcase the gateway to your soul.  When was the last time you saw yellow pearls?

Smile.  You’re taking a picture in a poorly lit room, with a limited lense.  Your teeth will show.  Are they yellow?

“Do you like yellow teeth?  Are you a yellow teeth man?  Do you only date people with yellow teeth?”

“Are yellow teeth part of your identity?”

Do you like yellow?  When you smile, do people yell, “Taxi!”, as if they’re hailing a Yellow Cab?

Do you notice people using the descriptor, “bananas”, in place of “crazy/strange/weird..” while in your presence?  You hear, “…it was all yellow…” on the radio.  A chorus from a Coldplay song.  And you immediately assume it was dedicated to you.

You know when you spill mustard on a crisp linen shirt?  It’s noticeable.  But not in a good way…

“Perhaps your smile looks great… In a black and white filter.”

“I really think that your smile looks amazing…. When you’re on the telephone.”

“You should smile more often.  This room could use some color.”

“What does a great smile get you in this world?  Seriously…. I’m asking… Please ask someone with a great smile.”

“I am so exhausted right now.  Smile please.  A blast of your breath will wake me up.”

“Are you brightening your teeth?  No- not you.  Was talking to someone that you were standing near.”

“You know how you can buy teeth whitening kits?  What kind of kit did you buy?  A darkening kit?”

“I really like having white teeth.”  Me.

“I really like having stained teeth.”  You.

Urban Smiles Family Dental can help you achieve a whiter smile.  Why wait?

Cheers to great teeth!

By | Uncategorized | No Comments

Well it seems that there are many reasons to hoist a glass high and “cheers” allowed with friends over some sort of Holiday, celebration, dinner, or just a Tuesday.. And while we encourage everyone to have a great and responsible time we do need to remind you of the effects alcohol can have on your teeth, we don’t want to be the downers… HOWEVER maybe today’s tips can give you the best of both worlds, a great celebration, AND a way to keep that smile perfect!

First things first The CDC considers heavy drinking to be more than eight drinks a week for women, and 15 or more for men. Gum disease, tooth decay, and mouth sores are all much more likely for heavy drinkers, and alcohol abuse is the second most common risk factor for oral cancer. So this being said we can all work towards a moderate balanced lifestyle that helps protect our bodies AND our teeth!

Secondly, The American Dental Association (ADA) warns that one of the often-forgotten side effects of alcohol can be just as damaging to your teeth: dehydration. Alcohol Consumption leads to a decrease in saliva flow, so instead of being washed away naturally, bacteria clings to the enamel and increases your risk of tooth decay. A GREAT rule of thumb is to order a round of water in between rounds of cocktails! This serves multiple purposes, not even the least of which is how your head feels the next morning…

And thirdly if you already have sensitive teeth, like whitening toothpaste, some over-the-counter mouthwashes and rinses contain alcohol and other chemicals that can make your teeth more sensitive — especially if your dentin’s exposed. Instead, try neutral fluoride rinses or simply skip the rinse and be more diligent about flossing and brushing.

We hope these tips help next time that party rolls around! And in the meantime come visit us at Urban Smiles Family Dental in Edmonton, Alberta!!!

Eat LOTS of vegetables with the rest of your meal, Fill your plate with an assortment of colorful veggies, full of smile-friendly vitamins and minerals. Red and orange veggies are usually high in vitamin C (good for gums), while leafy green vegetables are good sources of calcium (for strong teeth). And these vegetables actually do help you fill up faster!

Finally be sure to drink a lot of water! This helps all of our bodies systems, and when drinking wine or other acidic beverages and foods, water will help rinse the mouth and restore a proper environment!

OK well to save some of the dramatics, maybe we are a little tongue in cheek on this one… That being said it is funny to think that most parents are extra adamant about kids brushing their teeth this time of year.  We all know that not brushing them is definitely not a good idea, but the thought of extra sugar should not be the only reason to get kids to brush!

Everyday of the year is just as important as October 31st,in terms of getting our kids to brush their teeth! Honestly a dentist loves helping people feel confident about their smile, and it’s time parents take every opportunity to teach kids about the importance of the health of our teeth!

The real nightmare a dentist faces is when we neglect the very thing they have trained so long and hard to protect! So this Halloween be sure to get your kids to brush their teeth! But also save your dentist from a nightmare, and teach them that EVERYDAY is the best day to take care of a smile!

We here at Urban Smiles Family Dental love your smile! Have a safe and Happy Halloween! Don’t forget to brush!!!

Is your Child at Risk of Tooth Decay?

By | Featured | No Comments

If you have experienced a decayed tooth, you can begin to imagine how uncomfortable it would be for a kid. Unfortunately, tooth decay plagues many children that it should largely due to their sweet tooth. Sodas, candy, chocolate and other sweet bites loved by children are the source of tooth trouble.

How does it happen?

The mouth has naturally occurring bacteria. When you eat food containing sugar and starch like soda, candy or sweets, some of it sticks on the teeth and gums. When bacteria feed on these sugars, acid is produced. This acid eats into the tooth enamel over time, making a cavity.

An appearance of a white spot on the tooth is a sign that the enamel has worn away and weakened. Dr. Rob Andrew says at this point the decay can be reversed. Saliva contains minerals such as calcium and phosphate, and also fluoride from toothpaste. The tooth enamel can gradually build up again over time with good dental hygiene. If this is not done, a cavity develops which can only be remedied by filling.

Preventing tooth decay

The best fight against tooth decay is good dental hygiene. The mineral Fluoride, commonly found in toothpaste, is the best defense against tooth decay. It can stop and reverse decay. It replaces minerals lost and weakens acid producing bacteria. Apart from toothpaste, the Urban Smiles Family Dental clinic says that fluoride is in other sources;

  • Fluorinated water from water wells. However, this should be taken with care as water containing excessive fluoride can stain the teeth leading to brown teeth.
  • Fluoride gels and varnish that can be applied on the teeth
  • Mouth rinse containing fluoride

Brushing

Proper and regular brushing of the teeth with toothpaste is the best way of getting rid of leftover food particles sticking to the teeth and gums. Children should be assisted and taught how to brush teeth until they are about 7 or 8 years of age.

Visiting to the dentists

Regular dental checkups can identify any sign of tooth decay and remedy any damage. If a child has decay on the permanent teeth, filling could be considered.  The dentist can also apply a sealant on the molars and pre-molars to avoid food being trapped in the ridges.

Reducing sugary foods

Eating of Candy, soda, biscuits and other sweet snacks should be reduced.  Encourage your child to eat these foods after meals and then brush his/her teeth immediately afterwards.
