Dental Health Tips for the Over-55 plus

By February 2, 2023 No Comments

Seniors live longer now than they ever have. Many older people will still have some or all of their natural teeth because oral health care has gotten better over the years.

Changes happen to our teeth as we age. Changes like these can sometimes be caused by long-term illnesses or medicines.

Teeth that hurt when you eat hot or cold foods or touch them are called sensitive teeth.

Exposed roots: Your gums may start to pull away from your teeth as you get older. When roots are in the open, bacteria that can cause cavities can get to them.

As we get older, our teeth naturally get darker or more yellow. Also, if you eat and drink things that stain your teeth for a long time, the colour of your teeth can change. Plaque can also pick up stains and grows faster as we age.

For people over the age of 55, 65, 75 plus, taking care of their oral health can be an essential part of keeping their overall health in check. Brushing and flossing your teeth on a consistent basis are the two most important things you can do to maintain healthy teeth and gums, but there are other methods as well. Plaque buildup and early signs of decay or periodontal disease can be managed more effectively if patients visit their dentists on a consistent basis for professional cleanings.

This is the first and most important step in maintaining healthy teeth and gums. In addition, it is essential to give occlusal surfaces (also known as molar chewing surfaces) additional attention by using disclosing tablets or interdental brushes in order to clean between the teeth. Dentures should be checked on a regular basis to ensure a comfortable fit, and if any repairs are required, you should speak with a qualified professional. Caution should be exercised when consuming foods that have sugar added to them; snacks such as sticky candies or carbohydrates that are chewed frequently remain on teeth even after they have been thoroughly removed by brushing. Finally, in order to strengthen enamel against further dental challenges that may arise in later years due to dry mouth symptoms associated with certain medications or medical conditions like diabetes, it is a good idea to consider fluoride treatments as recommended by a licensed clinician. These treatments can be used to protect teeth against further dental challenges.
